Will brass oxidize and discolor? Can it maintain its shine?
Yes. Brass naturally oxidizes, gradually darkening from a bright finish to a dark patina. To maintain its shine, it requires regular polishing or a clear protective coating.
The distressed or antiqued effect is achieved through artificial oxidation and is relatively stable. However, without a protective coating, it may still slightly change over time due to factors such as humidity.
316-grade stainless steel with a simulated brass/patina effect is more suitable for outdoor use because its base material is highly corrosion-resistant and the effect is more stable. When using pure brass outdoors, you need to consider the risks of continued oxidation and patina sag, and regular maintenance is required.
